Scale: Now You See It...
Before:
This calcite crystal, magnified 300,000 X under an electron microscope, shows limestone scale in untreated groundwater.  The irregular edges catch and latch onto one another and the inside of pipe and plumbing to create scale.

Now you Don't
After:
These calcite crystals, magnified 300,000 X, are in groundwater that has been filtered once through the KDF media.  The crystals have been reshaped into small, even, rounded grains and rods that will not adhere to metallic surfaces. The solubility of water is also enhanced.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What's the payback on the system's cost?
This will vary according to the application, but most users find the system pays for itself within one to two years in significantly reduced operating, chemical, maintenance, and equipment costs.

How much maintenance is required?
The system is designed so that when properly installed, it will function independently.  Every system is equipped to automatically self-clean by backwashing.  Maintenance is minimal.

How much water does backwashing use?
The backwashing clock can cycle for up to an hour, but the actual amount of water used is 10 minutes per unit at 1.5 to 2 times the service rate.

How often is the media rebedded?
The media will likely need rebedding every three to five or more years, depending on various conditions.  Rebedding costs are generally less than 40% of the cost of chemical treatment.

Will the system increase water usage?
Actually, the system will reduce water usage because the treated water will have lower corrosivity and fewer cycles of concentration (three or less).

How CuZn™ and KDF® Work

CuZn uses a combination of the best available technology at the best available prices to solve water problems in industrial and commercial applications.
The leading media employed in CuZn systems is a patented copper-zinc alloy, trademarked as KDF®. This media works by catalytic action and the electrochemical reduction/oxidation caused by dissimilar metals, or "redox" for short.
Water containing dissolved oxygen, minerals, and organic matter enters a bed of the copper-zinc alloy.  Within each granule of the alloy, the copper becomes the cathode; the zinc the anode.  The spaces between the granules become electrolytic cells with the water and contaminants acting as electrolytes.  As water passes through the media, the chemical reaction causes zinc and copper hydroxides to form in controlled amounts.
These controlled hydroxide releases are carried into the filtered water where they kill bacteria and provide hostile conditions for algae and fungus growth.
The give-and-take of electrons during this process changes contaminants into harmless components or electroplates them to the media.
Additionally, redox changes the physical form of calcium and magnesium into hundreds of smaller, smooth-surface particles that do not attach to pipes, heat exchangers, etc.  Further, low level releases of hydrogen peroxide into the water kill the bacteria and/or algae that act as glue to build system scale.  As bacteria are killed, existing scale sloughs off.
CuZn systems carry a one-year warranty on media and parts, but properly maintained systems will perform several years before needing to be rebedded with new media.

Ronnigan Research
Vicksburg, Michigan

Ronnigan is on a well and septic water system. The Department of Environmental Quality came in and told Ronnigan they could not use chemicals because of the bleeding of the chemically treated water would contaminate the ground water and the nearby small river that ran by their building. In order to use chemicals, Ronnigan had to obtain a strict contract. So they researched CuZn Water Cooling Tower Filtration Units to solve their problem. Their CuZn Water Filtration Units were applied to the cooling towers in the start of the year 2000. Ronnigan has eliminated all costs of chemicals and hassles of strict contracts by using a CuZn Water Systems. The filtration system also cleaned out all past scale and mineral deposits; thus taking the pipe back to original size. They do not bleed any more water saving them on their water bill. When back flushing the filtration units the wasted back flush water is flushed back through the equipment and reused. Ronnigan has had zero problems with their CuZn units for over one year.
